Thanks for sharing this insightful interview. Nice to see that NHK has some Ainu footage in their media library. How many kilometers of these archives are sleeping in their, probably deteriorating until they all put it of numeric device. They should be promoting it more and should even be their duty to do so.
thank you much! i am an anthropology undergrad currently writing my Batchelor's thesis on Ainu identity in the modern day. it is surprisingly hard to find english-language sources dealing with this topic that aren't more than thirty years old, especially sources written by Ainu themselves! I really appreciate what you all at Project Uepeker are doing to help us English-speakers understand contemporary Ainu culture and the problems they face today. Thank you!
Mike, Mina Sakai is an outspoken young Ainu and the leader of the Ainu Rebels band. If you periodically google her, you may find new material about what the younger generation of Ainu are thinking and doing today. Here's a link to a Japan Times On-Line article about her:
Project U-e-peker is a team of people from a variety of nations and professions who are working to make Ainu folktales available in English. The Ainu are the indigenous people of Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan.
